Bacteriostatic water is sterile water for injection with 0.9 % benzyl alcohol added as antimicrobial preservative. In research it is the standard solvent for reconstituting lyophilized peptides and proteins. The benzyl alcohol inhibits microbial growth and enables multiple withdrawals from a vial over weeks without contamination risk. Unlike simple water for injection (WFI), BAC water remains sterile-usable for 28 days after vial puncture — crucial for protocols that require repeated withdrawals from the same vial unit.
